Map registered user fields to core Joomla user profile

I would like to add a date of birth field to facilitate some promotions and it seems the only way is to do it in the Joomla User Profile. It seems to only be possible in Joomla User Profile plugin. (I don't see a date field possibility in the eShop fields). I don't think that custom text input would be good there as people all write the dates differently in different parts of the world.

Is there any way to map fields to the core Joomla profile fields? e.g. Address 1, Address 2, Telephone etc. or must they exist in two different places?
Is it best to disable those fields in the core User Profile plugin?

I wanted to follow up on this and see how I can best integrate a birthday field for shoppers, without making them go to a different place to edit a Joomla profile?

If it’s impossible to add a date field option in the shopper custom fields, please let me know.
