Option images don't display unless I add additional product image

hello, I've added option images to my products. And while the "select" dropdown shows on the front end, the image assigned to that option does not display. But when I add an additional product image, the option images then display. Is this by design?

I'm not sure I will always have additional product images, and don't want that to interfere with displaying my option images.

if you are using 3.0.2
i believed this is a bug, when you "save & close" the option image will NOT be saved correctly and it cannot be displayed frontend

but if you only "save" then "close" (2 steps instead of 1) then the option image will be displayed frontend

pls help to report issue to owner to quickly fix the error

I am sorry but there is no different about the Save function between "Save" and "Save & Close" button.

I just tested again and I don't see the issue as you said.
