Losing Style sheet with some categories

In our Joomla 2.5.28 site we are seeing some strange behavior with our Edocman 1.5.2 extension. We are using menu items with category layouts and a template. If the category has an associated document, then the category displays without the template. But if the category doesn't have an associated document, then the category displays with the template. Have you seen this before? How can we correct it?
