After 1.7.2 update files no longer upload

Hi,
I'm going crazy here; updated yo 1.7.2 yesterday and now documents no longer upload. After attempting a new record I get "Notice Message body empty" and "Message Item successfully saved".

Permissions on the directory for storage are 755

I also note that directories are no longer being created when new categories are created.

I'm at a total loss as to what's happened so any and all suggestions welcome.
