Display categories alphabetically

Hi,
My web site has a large number of categories (1600!) - is there a way of automatically displaying the categories sorted alphabetically?
If the categories can only be displayed by the default sorting based on id - is there a way to re-organise the order or categories in a bulk way to become alphabetical?
