Show next upcoming event in a category in article

It would be nice to be able to display the next upcoming event in a category in an article as a table row rather than in detail. I am addiing two articles to the featured articles on the home page one from each category and the default takes up more space that I really want to use on the page. Also for the event group it would mean that they didn't need to keep track of which event is next.
