Event Booking Donation Field User Entered Ammount

I would like to add a donation field to my registration page. We are a non-profit organization and allowing the user to enter any amount when registering would be ideal. I do not want to have pre-defined amounts.

For example the event costs $100

I would like a field such as this

Scholarship Donation: [ ]

where the user can enter any amount

Scholarship Donation: [$200.00 ]

so when they check out the total cost will be

$100.00 registration fee + $200.00 donation = $300.00 total to register for the event.

Im just not sure how to get this working with custom fields since nothing I try is working.
