Variable membership price

Is there a way to set a minimum membership price, but permit visitors to increase that amount if they want? This is in the case where they purchase a membership for themselves, but then add additional amount to cover the membership of some unknown other person, kind of like a donation. They might purchase a $50 membership then add another $25 on top of that.

Is there a way to handle this, even with overrides? It would be better not to set up a separate place for donation-style payments.
