Keep old events on calendar but not on events list

In efforts to clean up the events list in each category, I clicked on Hide Past events (YES), but then they all went off the calendar, leaving it very blank and thus showing no activity.

Can we have the calendar keep the past events, but just the upcoming events in each category?

We are using the Categories List menu tab. So from the main menu, the customer sees all the categories, then they click on from there.

I found the "Upcoming Events" menu button, but that goes directly to ALL the upcoming events. Not by category.
