[SOLVED] Edocman Indexer or OS PDF Indexer was created by Emily Tarrant
Hi Tuan

I'm investigating putting a section on a site which has PDFs to download and a search for the PDFs. Edocman looks like a really good solution for this. It looks like there are two options available for a pdf indexing plugin:
Edocman Indexer: joomdonation.com/forum/edocman/16396-edo...-plugin-release.html
OS PDF Indexer: joomdonation.com/joomla-extensions/joomla-pdf-indexer.html

Could you tell me which of these I should be using please?

Cheers, Emily

Hi Emily

Just use EDocman. It has built-in indexer feature and it can display documents in nice format. With OS PDF Indexer, it can just make it possible to search for PDF documents via Joomla standard search.

Regards,

Tuan

Hi Tuan

Thanks for your reply. Do you mean just use the Edocman extension without any additional plugins?

I've set up a test install here: www.wfdevelopment.co.uk/joopdf/
It's running Joomla 2.5 and Edocman. I've uploaded one very simple test PDF. How do I index the PDF so that the content is searchable? If you could point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated.

Many thanks, Emily

Hi Emily

I am really sorry. I missed this question from you.

You will need to install and publish the EDocman indexer plugin which you can download at www.joomdonation.com/free_downloads/plug_edocmanindexer.zip

After that, try to upload a new PDF document and it should be indexed and can be searchable

Hi Tuan

I've installed the indexer plugin and enabled it. I've then uploaded the test PDF for a second time as a test: www.wfdevelopment.co.uk/joopdf/index.php/pdf-downloads . However, if I search (I've tried both the Joomla search (top right of screen) and the edocman search (left sidebar) and neither find the PDF when I search for a word that it contains.

Digging a little deeper, if I look at the PDF in the edocman_documents table in the database, the indexed_content field contains the following:
sh: /home/sites/wfdevelopment.co.uk/public_html/joopdf/plugins/edocman/indexer/binaries/linux/pdftotext: Permission denied

Could that be why the indexing hasn't worked?

Many thanks for your continued help!

Hi Emily

Could you please change permission of that file /plugins/edocman/indexer/binaries/linux/pdftotext to 775 or 777 and test it again ?

Maybe you can submit a support ticket sending us super admin and FTP account of your site. I am going to change permission, make sure it works for you

Hi Tuan, changing it to 775 did the trick. I added a third test and the indexing worked perfectly.

Thanks for all your help with this!
